Their story

The life behind the memories

Joseph “Joe” Fritz was my grandfather, although I never had the chance to meet him.

What I know about him comes from family history, old records, and, most importantly, from the people who actually knew him.

Joe was part of the New Minas and Kentville community for many years. In 1946, he established Joseph Fritz Enterprises in New Minas. The business became well known in the area and remained part of the local community for decades. He was also involved in community life and served as president of the Kentville Lions Club in 1957–58.

But the things that have meant the most to me came from conversations.

Over the years, I have met people who knew my grandfather. When I introduced myself and told them that I was Joe Fritz’s grandson, I would hear the same kind of comments over and over again.

They would tell me that he was a great guy.
And they would tell me that he treated everybody well.

Hearing those things has always meant a lot to me, especially because I never got the opportunity to know him for myself.

There is something special about hearing people speak warmly about someone many years after they are gone. They have no reason to say those things other than because that is genuinely how they remember him.

It makes me wish even more that I could have sat down with him, listened to his stories, asked him about his life and his business, and simply had the chance to know my grandfather.

I would have liked to have seen for myself the man that so many people remembered so fondly.

Still, in a way, those people gave me a small piece of him.

Every time someone told me that Joe Fritz was a good man, that he was kind, or that he treated people with respect, I learned a little more about the grandfather I never got to meet.

A business can disappear. Buildings can change. Names on signs and the Boot eventually come down.

From everything I have been told, that was Joe Fritz’s real legacy.

I never knew my grandfather personally, but I am proud to be his grandson.
